PROFILE OF GEOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT The Department of Geography is one of the academically leading departments of Jagiroad College since the establishment of the college in 1979. Department of Geography is situated at the northern part of the college campus in Sonaikuchi Block. Since the beginning, the department of Geography is playing a pivotal role in making Geography as a subject of interest Department is also enhancing its role in uplifting of locality by organizing the community level and school level popular talk, awareness programs on environment and sustainable development. Department of Geography sets a standard for teaching and supporting of students. Geography department is the pioneer department started major course in degree level with the effort of Mr. M. Tahbildar (Retired) and Dr. J. Das Choudhury (Retired) in the college in 1982. In the year 1987, the department established the “Jagiroad College Geographical Society” as a unit of North East India Society. Society organizes regular popular talk, quiz competition, extempore speech, departmental seminars, model and chart competition from time to time. The department offer B.A. (Honours and General Course) along with the Higher Secondary courses. At present (2022) there are 731 students including B.A. (Honours & General) and Higher Secondary course. The department also took responsibility to run the Environmental Studies as a compulsory subject in degree level under the coordinator ship of Dr. Khagen Sarma (Retired). On the other hand, all the faculty members teach MTM PG courses and help to the growth of MTM department. The department is undertaking excursion every year as a part of the degree syllabus to various parts of the country. Such type of excursion helps the students to observe the actual field of geography and to prepare dissertation. The department has a departmental library with more than 500 books and journals which become fruitful to all major and general students. The department has a wall magazine named “Geo Trivia” where the students writes geography articles, facts, figures, news etc. The department is equipped with ICT based Smart Classroom where students can enhance their learning experience. The well equipped Practical Laboratory provides a decent environment to the students to perform their practical works time to time. The department has a well equipped and fully function GIS laboratory which is an important part of major course to enhance the modern geographical technical knowledge. The department was then headed by Mr. Munindra Tahbildar for a long period of time. Now, present and existing head of the department is Mr Ratumoni Das. The Department of Geography got temporary affiliation for opening Honours course under the Gauhati University in 1984 vides Ec Resolution No. 47/3/88(1) dtd. 15/02/88 and is renewed annually till now.
