Welcome To Jagiroad College
Welcome to the Department of Physics, Jagiroad College. The department was established in the year 1986. Since its establishment, the department has been providing quality education in the Science stream in general and in the subject of Physics in particular. Initially, the department was started at Higher Secondary level with a handful of undergraduate general course students. Later in the year 1993, the major subject in undergraduate course was introduced. The department has started with two faculty members and now, the total number of sanctioned faculty increases to four and the total number of laboratory bearers is two. Ms. Rashmi Borthakur was the founder head of the department and Mr. Pallab Ch. Goswami was one of the other faculty members. However, both of them have left the college in 1987 and 1992, respectively. Later in 1989, 1993 and 1994, Dr. Prabir Banerjee, Mr. Hrishikesh Kalita & Dr. Rudra Kumar Das, respectively, have joined the college. The department has a well-equipped laboratory, which is supported by the Star College Scheme of the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. Further, the department has a separate dark room to perform different experiments related to optics. It has also a departmental library with a significant number of books. The faculty members of the department are well-experienced, highly qualified, duty-conscious and very efficient. Mr. Hrishikesh Kalita, Associate Professor and current Head of the Department and Dr. Rudra Kumar Das, Associate Professor, have more than 27 years of teaching experience. Whereas, Dr. Lavita Sarma, Assistant Professor has more than 11 years of teaching experience. Dr. Pranjal Sarma has recently (September 2022) joined the department as an Assistant Professor. The current faculty members of the department are specialised in Nuclear Physics, Theoretical Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Electronics and High-Energy Physics. Teachers of the department are encouraged to pursue research with about 75% of the faculty members already involved in research activities. All of them have already published several numbers of papers in peer-reviewed journal. The students of the department are very active and always participate in departmental seminar, group discussions, science exhibitions and other academic events of college. The department has also organised several workshop, hands on training, outreach programme for better learning and benefit of the students. The department has produced several notable alumni, which are working in various Universities/NIT/Colleges etc. Also, as many as fourteen students had completed postdoctoral degree, of whom, three from abroad. Vision: The department is aiming to set up an electronic/electrical equipment testing/repairing centre (Central Equipment Laboratory). This setup is expected to impart technical training to the students with DIC andother professional groups. The department also aimed to organize tours to various industries for the technical knowledge of the students.
